Unemployed California Workers Eligible for Additional $300 Per Week

Late last month, the California Employment Development Department announced its plans to begin the Lost Wages Assistance (LWA) program. This program will offer an additional $300 per week to workers receiving unemployment benefits. The money comes from the FEMA Disaster Relief Fund, typically used for aid after hurricanes and tornadoes. Recipients can expect to see the first payments on or after September 7th. 

The payments will be distributed in two phases. The first phase of payments will go to those who previously received unemployment benefits due to the pandemic. The second phase will be for those who are new to receiving unemployment benefits. 

The Lost Wages Assistance program is the second federal program to supplement state unemployment programs since March. The first program offered twice the current amount ($600 per week) in addition to state unemployment benefits. That program ended in late July, and unemployed workers have received no additional benefits since then. These payments will be retroactive to the date prior benefits stopped, accounting for approximately the three weeks without additional benefits. 

This second wave of additional funding was authorized by the President on August 8th. Each state has to apply to receive the funds and agree to certain conditions before they can receive the money. California’s application was approved on August 22, 2020. It is uncertain how long the payments will be available at this time.
